Fireworks are an American tradition. They are used so frequently in celebrations today that it is easy to forget that they are dangerous explosives and can cause serious injuries if not handled properly. Every year, more than 8,000 people in the U.S. suffer injuries caused by the personal use of fireworks. Nearly half of the victims are children. These casualties can be avoided easily by taking precautions and by keeping the following points in mind while burning fireworks:

  • Always store fireworks in a cool and dry place.

  • Children below 12 years of age should not handle fireworks.

  • Always light fireworks on a hard and flat surface.

  • Always light your fireworks in a clear open area, away from buildings, vehicles, and shrubbery.
